In our December 1995 Vision Paper News ( www. visionpaper, com/ newsletters/Jan95-1.html) we shouted about timber thefts in SWT (southwest Texas), and how kenaf would squelch the problem. Seven years later - worse. In Mexico, President Fox says deforestations' a "national security" problem. Raids against illegal logging operations, loggers shooting at forestry vehicles and officials, and buzz that gunmen murdered an activist for interfering in timber biz are reportedly fact. The Mexican National Forestry Commission chief says illegal logging is a billion dollar a year industry. That's big money! And speaking of money, in Brazil, feds protecting Amazon rainforests are busted for taking bribes from a timber company.

Stateside, the timber machine came up in another kind of crime. In North Carolina 22,999 marijuana plants (who counted them?) were seized on land owned by a timber company. There

logic applies when timber companies cut

reasonably intelligent person might think,
the mere fact that there are trees on your
public lands does not mean that you, the
public, actually own them.
So how does kenaf prevent crime? Simple, if you use kenaf to make paper instead of trees, the profits of illegal timber will disappear.
